Study Overseas : My Family and Friends Perspective

“Study abroad” is a chance to pursue your college studies in a foreign country. Students attend lectures or carry out research at a foreign university or through their home university’s study-abroad program. Participants typically live in a residence hall, apartment, or with a local family through a homestay.

So when I have a chance to study abroad here in Germany, I get a lot of different reactions and question from my relatives to my friends.

“Wow Germany? You must be really good in your field”

For context, when it come to study abroad, western countries usually not the first on the list because of how costly it is. So to be a part of the students who study abroad in Germany surprise a lot of my relative

“I heard it Expensive. How much is it?”

As a Vietnamese, the study abroad dream only for those who are financially stable since it cause a lot, usually about 200 – 400 millions ( roughly 8000 – 15000 Euro ). Taking for account that the average salary in about 15 million (about 600 Euro). Fortunately, with the help from SEPT, EWERK and our university HCMUTE, such luxury dream became a reality for us.

“Have you learned any German yet?”

To be honest, knowing I was chosen for this program, I prepare some basic German words sentences like Entschuldigung” – “Sorry”, “Danke schön” – “Thank you so much” and “Kann Sie Englisch sprechen?” – “Can you speak English”. Beside that, my German is no better than a kindergarten. Lucky me, my English is good enough so I can use it as a safety net when I embarrass myself with my lack of German knowledge.
